Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte deviated from his usual audacious stance and showed some gentleness on Sunday’s third leg of the PiliPinas Debates 2016, at least to Sen. Miriam Defensor Santiago.

Tasked to grill Santiago in the face-off round of the debate held in PHINMA University of Pangasinan, the tough-talking Duterte, recently controversial because of a rape joke, instead praised her and even inquired about her condition.

“Ma’am Miriam, what can I ask of you? I am facing a woman who would become the President of the Republic of the Philippines,” he said.

Duterte, who has said that he favors killing criminals, continued his words of affirmation even though his time to ask a question was up. The hosts did not stop him.

“It is even an insult to the intellect of everybody to be asking an learned and experienced human being in this planet,” he said.

To this, Santiago just gave a big smile while her supporters cheered her on.

Asked by one of the hosts if he has a question, Duterte responded, “Ang tanong ko, ma’am, how are you today?”

Santiago, a cancer survivor, replied with an update on her health.

“I am almost back to normal good health because I am on a secret pill that is not yet available in the market but being sold at very atrociously expensive. It is a miracle worker in the sense that I am almost normal now,” she said.

Duterte then continued their friendly exchange.

“Oh come on, you will live for a thousand years. No doubt about it. I rest my case,” he said.

Duterte and Santiago are known to be close to each other. In the first presidential debate in Cagayan de Oro City in February, the pair exchanged friendly remarks instead of barbs. Netizens found their closeness cute and called their tandem “DuRiam.” —KBK, GMA News
